Facilitators and obstacles to therapeutic alliance among patients with anorexia nervosa: A qualitative dyadic research

Objective Studies indicate a significant challenge for therapists in forming therapeutic alliance (TA) with patients coping anorexia nervosa (AN). While TA is predictor of treatment outcomes, and AN has low success rates, little known about factors that affect the formation an its quality AN. This study aimed at examining associated formation, as perceived by patient–therapist dyads throughout therapy. Methods A total 18 their were recruited from eating disorder unit. The semistructured interviews focussed on between therapist patient examined facilitators towards, barriers to, formation. Data analysis followed thematic approach. Results data revealed overarching theme: mutual wish to form close relationship related challenges. theme was divided into subthemes: (1) role self-disclosure affection; (2) meaning setting; (3) ruptures; (4) importance empathic acknowledgements. Conclusion major barrier patients' conflict need meaningful relationships fear re-experiencing disappointment pain. Self-disclosures affection, flexible setting, acknowledgement therapists' failures ability see things perspectives are facilitate also presents practical implications derived these themes.
